IRPLAST and TOPPAN drive innovation forward and win the Silver Award at INTERPACK with their 100% recyclable mono-material pouch
Düsseldorf, 13th of May 2026 – IRPLAST and TOPPAN take the podium of innovation by winning the Silver Award in the Sustainability Design Award category, as part of the Save Food initiative promoted during interpack, the leading global packaging trade fair held in Düsseldorf.
Among more than 100 applications, the award recognises the new mono-material polypropylene pouch, designed to support recyclability and help extend the shelf-life of packaged products. The award ceremony took place in a highly visible setting, attended by major players in the industry and supported by organisations such as the World Packaging Organisation, Messe Düsseldorf, the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The award was presented by Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack.
The new pouch was developed by combining IRPLAST’s special thermostable films with TOPPAN’s GL BARRIER film technology. This combination allows the solution to endure retort processing while offering the same level of protection as traditional multi-layer pouches. The ultra-thin transparent barrier helps preserve the packaging performance without compromising compatibility with plastic recycling processes.
The outer layer, barrier layer and sealing layer of the pouch are all made of polypropylene, making the solution compatible with the PP recycling stream. Moving from multi-layer, multi-material structures to a mono-PP solution represents a concrete step towards more circular packaging models, in line with the future requirements of the PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The award ceremony was attended by Hiroshi Suzuki, Chief Technology Officer of TOPPAN and Chairman of IRPLAST, together with Fausto Cosi, CEO of IRPLAST. The Committee, made up of experts from the fields of economics, science and technology, selects projects that effectively contribute to recognising highly sustainable solutions designed to reduce food waste.
